History - BURG-WÄCHTER CASTELLO was designed for sporting events, concerts, congresses as well as events.

Originally it was meant as a 4-fold gymnasium for the adjacent Christian school (Freies Christliches Gymnasium). The school was planned and designed by a supporting association in 2003 and founded thereafter. To get the authorization to build a school, it was necessary to prove the existence of a gymnasium. However, the financial support for constructing the gymnasium turned out more difficult than expected. It was then deliberated whether to build it as a structure that can also house spectators. Nationwide research was done, and it was decided to build a gymnasium that would fit 3,000 people. The architectural concept for the school and the gymnasium (now named multipurpose hall) was tendered and a jury picked a winner.

The first prize went to the architects Franken + Fette from Düsseldorf who were commissioned to build the school. The second prize went to the architects Guida and Mischok from Rheinfelden. After several discussions and considerations, it was decided that the architects from Rheinfelden were to build the multipurpose hall. The hall would now be suitable for major league sports such as the handball team HSG Düsseldorf and the basketball team Magics Düsseldorf. Both teams had been looking for an adequate coliseum in Düsseldorf for a while. Thanks to the mayor of Düsseldorf (Joachim Erwin), as well as the political parties CDU and FDP, the city of Düsseldorf paid for the rent for the HSG and the MAGICS. This, however, meant that the now fairly large gymnasium could not be used anymore for the Christian school it was meant to be associated with.

To put the hall to good use, research was done to see what other public events it might be used for. Extensive discussions were held with TV stations, organizers, sports agencies, etc. and showed that it would be suitable for TV, press, concerts, events and congresses, as well as 78 different indoor sports (which can be played in this building). Furthermore, the kitchen facilities of the Christian school (full day school) are being used for catering at BURG-WÄCHTER CASTELLO. In October 2005, the hall had its big kick-off with a game of the Magics and Boxing Live on German TV.

Its entirely glass-covered façade at first glance gives the building a look similar to that of a dotcom company in Silicon Valley whose daily business is globalization, i.e. mastery of technological and economic change in this computerized era. By now a variety of events have taken place here, such as boxing, handball, hockey, basketball, tennis, as well as concerts, congresses, banquets for 1,000 people and company events. We hope that with the cornerstone of the hall and the motto of the Christian school "Seek the City's Best!", together with the city of Düsseldorf, non-profit organizations, as well as the company after whom the hall was named (company BURG-WÄCHTER from Wetter an der Ruhr), BURG-WÄCHTER CASTELLO will manage to do the "city's best" justice. That's what we stand for and work towards.
